The painted houses of Villajoyosa old town: yellow, pink and white façades with iron balconies.

Villajoyosa spans a seafront, a dense old town of painted houses, and urbanisations climbing the slopes behind.

Each of the three creates a different obstacle between your meter and your car.

Access, gradient, and what they do to an installation

The hillside urbanisations have the longest runs we install anywhere. A meter at the road and a house set well above it can put eighty metres or more between the supply and the parking space, and every metre has to be accounted for in the conductor size because voltage drop is calculated over the whole length at full load. On the longest of these, the cable costs more than the charger.

Gradient adds a second problem that flat sites do not have: water. A trench on a slope becomes a channel, and runoff after the autumn storms tracks along it to whatever is at the bottom. Burying cable on sloping ground without proper protection and adequate drainage is how you produce a fault that appears three winters later, and we have dug up enough of them to take it seriously.

The old town is the opposite constraint. Runs are short, but access is genuinely difficult: streets too narrow for a vehicle, no parking anywhere near the door, and materials carried the last stretch by hand. It affects the labour rather than the materials, and it is the reason a job that looks small on paper takes longer here than the same job elsewhere.

What all three have in common is that none of them can be judged remotely. We visit, measure the actual route, and give one fixed figure — and in this town more than any other, that visit routinely changes the number substantially in both directions.

What we typically find here

  • Supply runs of eighty metres or more on hillside plots, where the cable is the main cost
  • Trenches on sloping ground acting as drainage channels for storm runoff
  • Old town properties where materials have to be carried the last stretch by hand
  • Existing buried cable laid years ago without adequate protection or drainage

Common questions

My house is high above the road. Does that change much?

Substantially. Conductor size is calculated from the voltage drop over the whole run at full load, so eighty metres uphill needs considerably more cable than a short run. On the longest plots here the cable is the largest single item in the quote.

Can you install in the old town, given the access?

Yes. Cable runs there are usually short, but materials have to be carried the final stretch and there is nowhere to park, so the labour takes longer than the same job elsewhere. We tell you that at the quote stage rather than after.
