Working out where the supply actually goes

In the painted houses of the old town, supply arrangements are the hardest part of the work. Buildings share party walls and risers, cables were added along façades and through shared spaces as they were needed, and the arrangement that exists today is the accumulated result of decades of individually sensible decisions.

What that means in practice is that the meter position, the route of an individual supply and the boundary of what belongs to which property are frequently not what anyone assumes. We have opened boards here whose labelling described the building as it was two owners ago, and traced supplies that take a route no one would design.

This is why fault-finding and rewiring take longer in the old town than anywhere else we work. Establishing which circuit belongs to which property, and where the supply for it actually comes from, is genuinely the first half of the job — and it has to be done before any sensible quote for the second half exists.

We price the work rather than the archaeology, and we tell you at the start when the diagnosis is going to be the bulk of it. What we do not do is give a headline figure and discover the building on the day.
