Certifying an installation whose edges are unclear

A certificate describes a specific installation serving a specific property. In the old town that sounds simpler than it is, because supplies were added along façades and through shared risers over many decades, and the arrangement that exists is the accumulation of decades of individually reasonable decisions.

What we find is genuine ambiguity: circuits that serve parts of two properties, supplies that take a route through a neighbouring building, meter positions that do not correspond to the property they feed. None of it was done wrongly at the time; it simply predates anyone needing to draw a clean line around it.

That matters because a certificate cannot describe an installation whose boundary nobody can state. Establishing what belongs to the property being certified is therefore the first piece of work, and in these buildings it is not a formality — it can take longer than the inspection itself.

It also occasionally produces an uncomfortable finding, which is that a neighbour is fed from something on your side of the boundary, or the reverse. We tell you when we find it, because it has to be resolved before the paperwork can be honest.
