Electrician in Sant Joan d'Alacant

Sant Joan d'Alacant is a town in its own right, inland of the beach, with its own ayuntamiento and its own planning procedures. Its housing is dominated by detached and semi-detached properties, newer estates and villas with gardens, and it is home to the Sant Joan university hospital.

It is regularly confused with Playa de San Juan, which is the beachfront district of Alicante city — different municipality, different town hall, different building stock, and a very different set of electrical problems. We cover both, and they have separate pages for exactly that reason.

Why the municipality matters for paperwork

Because Sant Joan is its own municipality, work that needs a municipal permission goes to Sant Joan town hall rather than to Alicante. That sounds like a formality and occasionally is not: the route, the forms and what is treated as a minor works declaration versus something requiring a licence are set locally, and they are not identical to Alicante's.

For most of what we do — a car charger, an air conditioning system, replacing a consumer unit — this makes no practical difference to you. Where it starts to matter is anything that touches the exterior of a property, a solar installation on a roof, or work in a property that is changing use. Detached houses: gardens, pools and outbuildings

The characteristic Sant Joan job is a circuit that leaves the house. Garden lighting, an irrigation controller, a gate motor, a pool pump, a summer kitchen, a workshop in an outbuilding — all of them are outdoor circuits running some distance from the board, and all of them fail differently from anything indoors.

The recurring faults are water ingress at junction points, degraded outdoor enclosures, and buried cable that was laid without proper protection years ago and has since been dug through by a gardener. Distance is the other factor: a run to the far end of a plot needs sizing for voltage drop, and undersized runs to garden equipment are one of the more common things we find.

Where there is a pool, equipotential bonding is the part nobody thinks about and the part that matters most. It is a genuine safety issue rather than a paperwork one, and on older installations it is frequently either absent or has corroded through at the connection.

Car chargers and solar on detached property

A detached house is the easiest place to install a car charger — your own board, your own garage or driveway, nobody to notify — and the easiest place to over-specify one. The question is still your car and your overnight parking hours, not the maximum the wall can take.

Solar is more interesting here than in the apartment districts, because a detached roof gives real freedom on orientation and array size. The limit is usually not the roof but the consumption pattern: a house that is empty during the working day exports most of what it generates, and the return comes from shifting the pool pump, the washing and the car charging into daylight rather than from adding more panels.
