Getting to the equipment is half the job

On a detached house, outdoor units end up wherever was convenient on the day they were installed. On a flat roof behind a parapet, in a side passage a metre wide, on a bracket above a terrace, at the back of a plot behind mature planting that was not mature when the unit went in.

Each of those is fine for the installation and awkward for everything afterwards. The other consequence is diagnosis. Where several systems were installed at different times by different companies, nothing is documented and nothing matches. Working out which indoor unit belongs to which condenser, which is the one actually failing, and what refrigerant each holds is genuinely a task before any repair starts.

What we do is straightforward: work out what is on the property, note where each unit is and how it is reached, and tell you which of them are realistically maintainable in their current positions. Occasionally the honest answer is that moving a condenser to an accessible position pays for itself in servicing over its remaining life.
