Pool and outdoor electrics in Sant Joan d'Alacant

Sant Joan d'Alacant is the municipality inland of the beach, not the Playa de San Juan district of Alicante city.

Its detached plots put electrical cable and water pipe in the same ground, usually with no record of either.

Where buried cable and buried water meet

A villa plot here typically carries a pool circuit, garden lighting, an irrigation system, a gate motor and often a supply to an outbuilding — all buried, all installed at different times, and almost none of it recorded. The irrigation went in with the landscaping; the pool circuit came with the pool; the lighting was added later by somebody else.

The two systems interact in ways that only appear years afterwards. Irrigation leaks are slow and invisible because the water is supposed to be there, so a weeping joint saturates the ground around it indefinitely. If an electrical run or a junction chamber sits in that patch of permanently wet ground, its protection is being tested continuously rather than occasionally.

The second interaction is mechanical. Whoever digs to repair a drip line, plant a tree or extend a bed is digging in ground that also contains electrical cable, and without records they are digging blind. A large share of the outdoor faults we attend on plots like these began as a spade.

What helps is not exotic. Cable at proper depth with warning tape above it so a spade finds the tape first. Junction chambers positioned out of low spots where water collects, with entries from below. And a simple record of where things run, which costs nothing at the time of installation and is close to priceless a decade later.
