A shared pool has a filtration plant that runs for hours every day through the season, plus lighting, and sometimes a heater. That is a real and continuous consumption, and it comes from somewhere — but in urbanisations that grew in phases, "somewhere" is often not the communal supply anybody assumes.

We are called out to this regularly. A plant room turns out to be fed from one property's individual supply, because that was the nearest available connection when the pool was built or when the pump was last replaced. That owner has been paying for the community's filtration for years without knowing, and the discovery usually happens for an unrelated reason.

The reverse also happens: a private extension, a garden lighting circuit or an outbuilding hanging off the communal supply, which the community has been paying for. Neither situation is anyone's deliberate doing, and both are awkward to raise, which is exactly why they persist.

Establishing it is straightforward. Isolating a supply and seeing what stops takes an hour and produces an unambiguous answer. If a shared pool in an urbanisation has never been checked, it is worth doing before the question arises in a more difficult context, such as a sale or a dispute between neighbours.
