Industrial roofs, and why they suit solar better than houses do

A warehouse roof is close to ideal for photovoltaics, and for reasons that have nothing to do with the panels. It is large, it is unshaded because there is nothing tall nearby, it is usually a simple geometry with long uninterrupted runs, and it is frequently a shallow-pitched metal deck that panels can be clamped to without penetrating anything at all.

That last point is worth dwelling on. On a standing-seam or trapezoidal metal roof, panels attach with clamps that grip the profile itself, so there are no holes and no sealing detail to fail. Compared with a domestic tiled roof, where every mounting hook is a point that has to be dressed correctly, the mounting risk is dramatically lower.

The bigger advantage is the consumption pattern. A business running machines, compressors, lighting and air conditioning from eight in the morning to six in the evening consumes electricity at exactly the hours solar produces it, which means self-consumption is naturally high. That is the single number that determines whether a solar installation is a good investment, and it is why the same array pays back faster on a workshop than on a house whose occupants are out all day.

The constraint is usually the roof structure rather than the area. Older industrial roofs were not designed with an additional distributed load in mind, and a structural check comes before the design rather than after it. On the domestic side, Elche housing splits between tiled pitched roofs in the older areas and flat terraces in the newer ones, and both are routine.
