Why so many Elche emergencies start at the meter

More of our Elche call-outs turn out to be metering and supply problems than anywhere else we cover, and the reason is the building stock. Workshops, converted ground-floor premises and older blocks all tend to have supply arrangements that have been modified more than once, and the modifications are where faults collect.

The classic version is a premises whose use has changed. A unit wired as a workshop, now operating as a shop or a gym, still has its original supply and metering sized and arranged for machines that left years ago. When the new use finally exceeds what the arrangement can carry, the failure appears at the weakest point, which is almost always a connection at or near the meter rather than out on a circuit.

The second version is the shared centralisation. In older Elche blocks, meter rooms have been extended as flats were subdivided or premises added, and the individual supply cables running from them are not always the ones the labelling claims. Tracing which supply actually serves which unit is frequently the first half of the job, and it is genuinely slow work.

What this means for you at 2 a.m. is worth knowing: if your power has gone and your neighbours still have theirs, the fault is on your side of the meter. If a whole stair or a whole row of units has gone, it is on the communal or distributor side, and the right first call may be the distribution company rather than us.
