El Campello runs several kilometres along the coast, and much of its housing is used seasonally.

That combination produces a particular kind of failure: slow degradation, discovered suddenly.

How salt turns a slow problem into a night call-out

Corrosion does not cause emergencies directly. What it does is degrade connections until one of them fails under load, and because the degradation is invisible and gradual, the failure arrives with no warning at the worst possible moment — which along this coast is a full house in August with the air conditioning running.

The mechanism is straightforward. Salt-laden air reaches terminals in outdoor enclosures, at condenser units, in garden junction boxes and at any connection that is not properly sealed. The connection develops resistance, resistance produces heat, heat accelerates the corrosion, and the process compounds. By the time it fails there is usually visible discolouration or scorching at the terminal.

What makes El Campello particular is the seasonal pattern layered on top. A property empty from October to June has had eight months of salt air working on it with nobody using the circuits, so nothing revealed the deterioration. The first heavy load of the season is what finds it, which is why our call-out volume here spikes in the first hot fortnight rather than spreading through the summer.

The counter to it is inspection rather than repair. Outdoor enclosures, the condenser, garden junctions and the board take about an hour to go through, and doing that in May finds the connections that are on their way out while they are still a scheduled job at a normal rate rather than an emergency at an August one.
