Both environments put water into equipment, and they do it in completely different ways.

Damp, salt and where water actually gets in

On the seafront, the mechanism is airborne. Salt-laden air reaches every outdoor surface continuously, and where it settles on a condenser coil it holds moisture against the aluminium fins. That combination corrodes far faster than either would alone, and it works hardest exactly where airflow is poorest — the back of the coil, the underside, and any face pressed close to a wall.

Up the hillside, the mechanism is gravity. Autumn storm runoff finds outdoor enclosures, junction boxes and the cable entries into them. An enclosure that is fine on a flat plot can be sitting in a temporary watercourse on a slope, and water that gets into a box does not leave: it sits at the bottom, around the terminals, until it evaporates or causes a fault.

The symptom sets differ. Salt corrosion is gradual and shows as declining performance, refrigerant leaks at the copper-aluminium joint, and visible erosion of the fins. Water ingress is abrupt: everything works, a storm passes, and a unit will not start or trips its protection immediately.

What helps on the front is airflow and rinsing — real clearance around the unit and fresh water on the coil during the season. What helps on the slope is where the enclosure sits and how the cable enters it: glands from below rather than from above, and a position out of anything that becomes a channel when it rains hard.

Why does my condenser corrode faster than my neighbour's?

Usually position rather than the equipment. Salt settles and holds moisture worst where airflow is poorest, so a unit pressed close to a wall or with little clearance corrodes much faster than the same model with room around it and regular fresh-water rinsing.
