What your contracted power can actually carry

Before any conversation about circuits, there is a ceiling: the contracted power. It is the maximum the property may draw at any instant, and in a flat with five independent occupants it is reached far more often than in the family home the flat was designed for.

The difference is not total consumption but simultaneity. A family cooks once, showers in sequence and watches one television. Five adults living independently each cook, each charge devices, each run a heater in January, and they all do it between seven and ten at night because that is when everyone is home. Same appliances, same flat, entirely different peak.

This is why redistributing circuits is often the right answer and increasing power is often not. Spreading the load across more circuits with proper protection stops one fault taking out the whole flat and stops a single overloaded run doing all the work. It does not raise the ceiling, but in most of these flats the ceiling is not the binding constraint — the concentration of load on one or two circuits is.

Where the contracted power genuinely is the limit, we will say so, and the calculation is simple enough to do at the board in a few minutes. What we will not do is quote a power increase as a reflex, because it raises the standing charge permanently and in a let property that cost lands on the owner every month whether the rooms are full or empty.
