Where a community can decide the outdoor unit goes

The facade of an apartment block is communal property, and unlike a charging point in your own parking space, hanging a condenser on it is not something you have an automatic right to do. Communities can and do regulate where outdoor units are fixed, and many here have adopted rules requiring them to go on a light well, a rear elevation or a designated position rather than on the street frontage.

That is a legitimate decision on their part, and it is worth finding out what your community has decided before you buy equipment rather than after. The commonest version of this problem we are called into is a unit already purchased, sized for a position the community will not accept, with the acceptable position being further from the indoor unit than the equipment allows for.

Distance matters because refrigerant pipe runs have practical limits, and pushing them changes performance. A position on the far side of a light well may add ten or fifteen metres of pipe, which for some equipment is fine and for other equipment is outside what the manufacturer permits. That is a specification decision, and it has to be made before ordering, not after.

The other pattern specific to this town is multiple units on one block. In flats let by the room, several occupants each wanting a unit means several condensers appearing on the same elevation, and communities react to that by tightening the rules. Where a whole flat is being fitted out, a multi-split with one outdoor unit is very often the answer that gets approved when four separate splits would not.
