What salt does to a condenser, and what actually slows it

A condenser works by moving air across a coil of thin aluminium fins bonded to copper tube. Salt-laden air corrodes the aluminium, and as the fins degrade the coil moves less heat, the unit works harder, and the copper-to-aluminium joints eventually develop refrigerant leaks. That is the failure mode here, and it is why units on this strip do not last as long as identical units five kilometres inland.

Position is the dominant variable, and it is worth more than any equipment upgrade. A unit in the direct onshore wind with no shelter fails materially sooner than the same unit on a protected elevation. Raising it off the ground stops salt spray and splash sitting underneath it. Leaving real clearance around it means it is not recirculating its own hot exhaust, which raises operating temperature and accelerates everything.

Where a position is genuinely exposed and cannot be improved, coated coils are worth specifying rather than treating as an upsell. The coating is a real corrosion barrier and on a seafront elevation it changes the economics: the premium is small against replacing a unit years early.

The maintenance that matters most costs nothing. Rinsing the coil with fresh water periodically through the season removes the salt film before it does its work. It is genuinely the single highest-value thing an owner in this district can do, and almost nobody does it. Do not use a pressure washer on the fins — they bend, and bent fins block airflow as effectively as corroded ones.
